Apprentice Optician 3.4 3.4 out of 5 stars 155 Borthwick Avenue, Portsmouth, NH 03801 Description: The Apprentice Optician will work closely with experienced opticians, optical department staff, and patients to develop the skills necessary to become a fully licensed optician. This role focuses on providing excellent patient care, assisting with eyewear selection, handling fittings and adjustments, and learning the technical aspects of optical lens creation. The Apprentice Optician will gain hands-on experience in optical sales, customer service, and the use of optical instruments. Requirements: Essential Functions: Patient Interaction & Support: Greet and assist patients in the optical department, ensuring a welcoming and professional environment. Help patients choose the right eyewear based on their prescription, face shape, and style preferences. Take precise measurements, such as pupillary distance and fitting height, to ensure proper lens fitting. Educate patients on the benefits and features of different lenses and frames, including progressive lenses, coatings, and materials. Assist with fitting, adjusting, and repairing eyewear to ensure patient comfort and satisfaction. Technical & Sales Responsibilities: Shadow and assist licensed opticians in creating and fitting eyeglasses based on doctor prescriptions. Learn to operate optical equipment, such as lensometers, frame heaters, and pupilometers Assist with processing and verifying optical orders with labs, ensuring accuracy and timeliness. Gain proficiency in using Eyefinity to enter and track patient orders, update records, and process payments. Develop skills in interpreting eyeglasses and contact lens prescriptions. Training & Learning: Participate in training sessions to learn about the latest eyewear trends, lens technologies, and optical products. Work towards meeting state or regional requirements for optician certification by gaining hours of practical experience. Stay updated on industry standards, including regulations for optical products, prescription lenses, and patient safety. Inventory Management: Assist in managing and organizing inventory, including frames, lenses, contact lenses, and accessories. Learn how to handle vendor relations for ordering and replenishing stock in the optical department. Customer Service: Provide exceptional customer service by addressing patient inquiries and concerns about their eyewear, contact lenses, and vision care. Minimum Requirements (education and experience): High School graduate or GED is required Preferred: Experience in customer service and/or retail Experience working in healthcare or optical setting Certification: No certifications are required at the time of hiring; however, the candidate must be willing to pursue optician certification in accordance with state regulations Work Conditions: Typical office and sales environment conditions Noise level is usually quiet Physical Requirements: Regularly required to sit, walk and stand Talk or hear, both in person and by telephone Use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel or operate standard office equipment Reach with hands and arms; and lift up to 25 pounds.
