A resume may not be substituted for an application.Minimum RequirementsHigh School Diploma or its equivalent AND Completion of a Cement Finisher’s apprenticeship program AND four (4) years of experience as a Cement Finisher, OR six (6) years of experience as a Cement Finisher. Must show proof of a current, valid, PA driver’s license prior to appointment. Additionally, it is the policy of Allegheny County that in order to receive a final offer of employment, candidates must successfully pass a background check, which includes verification of Allegheny County Real Estate Tax status.Position SummaryThis is skilled work placing, finishing, and/or repairing concrete. An employee in this class performs skilled cement finishing tasks following standard practices of the trade. Work involves independent judgment in performing the work and various degrees of specialization based upon assignments and may involve supervision over helpers. Employees receive oral and written instruction, sketches, and blueprints. A foreman or other supervisor may inspect the work to ensure it meets specifications and trade standards.OverviewDutiesAssists in setting forms built by carpenters into place.Performs the mixing, pouring, tamping, screeding, and floating of concrete to construct floors, sidewalks, curbs, etc.Levels concrete and applies curing and surface treatments to finish the concrete.Lays out, cuts, and installs pavers.Installs and grouts concrete pipe, as required, for road modifications.Performs various terrazzo finish work.Repairs concrete areas.Directs the work of laborers assisting on projects, as necessary.Performs other related duties as assigned.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge ofThe methods, practices, materials, and tools of the cement masonry/finishing/paver/terrazzo trade.Elementary properties of concrete and cement mixtures.Block laying and concrete pipe installation.The occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.Skill inAbility toPerform the trade safely and efficiently, using a variety of tools commonly associated with the trade.Perform journey-level cement trade work, using sketches, plans, blueprints, as necessary.Make simple estimates of time and materials and inspect materials for grade and quality.Lift and move a maximum of 50 pounds.Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.Pay attention to detail and complete projects on time.Travel to different job sites throughout the County.
