Job Description:
Are you mechanically inclined and looking to build a rewarding career in equipment assembly and maintenance? The Millwright Apprenticeship Program at BW Papersystems offers a hands-on path to becoming a certified mechanical or electrical millwright while gaining paid, real-world experience and technical instruction.
This is a four-year apprenticeship program in collaboration with Northcentral Technical College (NTC). Apprentices will work part-time while attending school, learning the fundamentals of machine assembly, mechanical and electrical maintenance, system integration, and troubleshooting.
Throughout the program, apprentices will work side-by-side with experienced millwrights and technicians, gaining exposure to large industrial equipment and hands-on field service. All education, travel time, and instruction are paid. Upon completion, graduates are expected to work full-time for four years at BW Papersystems’ Phillips, WI facility.
Key Responsibilities
Assemble machines and subassemblies using blueprints and bills of materials (BOMs)
Move and align large equipment using hoists, dollies, cranes, and precision tools
Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems
Interpret and work from electrical schematics and mechanical prints
Assist in planned maintenance and installations across the facility
Support occasional field service assignments as needed
Follow strict safety and PPE protocols
Attend 4 hours per week of paid classroom instruction at NTC
Program Details
8-year total program (4-year apprenticeship + 4-year post-program agreement)
7,424 total hours of structured on-the-job training
576 hours of paid instruction at NTC (typically 1 day per week)
Education and travel time are paid; candidates must be local to the area
Apprentices complete their Journeyman Millwright certification while working and going to schoool for a combined total of 40 hours a week
Following completion, candidates must work full-time for 4 years at BW Papersystems in Phillips, WI
Must maintain a B or above in all coursework (falling below places the apprentice on probation; two consecutive semesters may result in program termination)
6-month probationary period
First Aid & CPR certification required in year one
“Transition to Trainer” course completed in the final year
All travel, class time, and tuition are company-paid
Work Schedule
1st shift: 4x10s or 5x8s (start times between 5-7 AM)
After completing the apprenticeship, additional shift options may be available
Required Skills & Qualifications
High school diploma or GED
Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and desire to learn
Ability to work both independently and on a team
Clear communication skills
Physically capable of lifting 50 lbs and working in active environments
