SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS The Safety Assistant supports the implementation and maintenance of health and safety programs at Rex Lumber. This role ensures compliance with occupational safety regulations, assists in training employees, conducts inspections, and promotes a culture of safety to minimize workplace hazards and incidents. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Assist in implementing and enforcing workplace safety policies and procedures. Conduct regular safety inspections and audits of equipment, work areas, and employee practices to ensure compliance with OSHA and company safety standards. Assist in developing and delivering safety training programs, including new hire orientations, toolbox talks, and ongoing safety education. Support incident investigations by gathering information, preparing reports, and recommending corrective actions. Monitor and ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) by employees. Maintain safety records, reports, and documentation, ensuring accuracy and compliance in our Safety Management System. Assist in emergency preparedness planning, including fire drills, emergency actions and first aid response coordination. Promote a strong safety culture by actively engaging with employees and addressing safety concerns. Support risk assessments and hazard identification efforts in all departments. Work closely with supervisors and management to ensure a safe work environment. As the Safety Assistant, you are expected to be reachable by phone for work-related matters. Be available if called in outside of scheduled hours Participate in action planning process All other duties assigned by supervisor and management QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS High school diploma or equivalent (Associate’s degree in Occupational Safety or related field preferred). Prior experience in a safety-related role, preferably in a manufacturing or industrial environment. Knowledge of OSHA regulations and workplace safety best practices. Strong communication and training skills. Ability to conduct safety audits, inspections, and incident investigations. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). First aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain). OSHA 30 certification (or willingness to obtain). Ability to work in a physically demanding environment, including exposure to loud noise, dust, and varying temperatures. WORK ENVIRONMENT Work primarily in an industrial sawmill environment, requiring adherence to PPE guidelines. Exposure to moving machinery, wood dust, and other hazards, requiring strict safety compliance. May involve standing, walking, and occasional lifting of materials up to 50 lbs.
