Isthmus Instruments is the first woman-owned handpan company in the world , and we’re looking for passionate, detail-oriented individuals to join our production team and grow into tuning apprentices . This role starts with shop support—packaging, polishing, and prep work—and, for the right candidates, it evolves into a long-term apprenticeship in the art of handpan tuning . You’ll work directly inside our workshop, crafting high-quality, custom musical instruments by hand. This is not your average warehouse or shop job—it’s a chance to learn a rare trade, work with sound, and grow into a highly skilled role. Job Structure Phase 1 – Shop Hand (First 1-3 months) Assist with sanding, polishing, and preparing steel shells Use hand tools, machinery, and pneumatic hammers to shape and prep metal Pack and ship instruments with precision Keep the workshop organized, clean, and running smoothly Record tasks and timesheets accurately Phase 2 – Apprentice Track (After 3-6 months) Observe and study the tuning process with master builders Practice tuning on training pieces (materials + tools provided) Demonstrate growth through repetition, ear training, and technique Support product development, prototyping, and fine-detail finishing Opportunity to grow into a full-time role with 50% tuning, 50% production/logistics responsibilities Growth Potential Starts at $13-$16.50/hour Up to $20/hour based on performance and tuning skill development Full-time opportunities may include roles in: Instrument tuning & Production Tooling Development for those with previous fabrication or engineering experience Production supervision R D, prototyping, or equipment innovation We’re building a team of lifelong learners and craftspeople.
