Summer Apprentice Repertory Company (ARC) Stage Manager (Non-AEA)

Commonwealth Shakespeare Company is seeking two (2) non-Equity Stage Managers, one each for our Apprentice Repertory Company (ARC) shows directed by Bryn Boice and TBA. The Stage Managers will work closely with the director of their production and the ARC Production Manager to coordinate and run rehearsals and performances. The productions will be performed by the CSC Apprentice Company, a group of approximately 34 undergraduate level actors who will be divided between the two shows. Our program is intended to be joy-based and support the growth of our Apprentices. Although these plays will be fully produced, the design focus is on costumes, props, and some sound, with very little emphasis on lights and set.

FLSA Status: Temporary; Part-Time; Non-Exempt employment on a W-2

Location: Hybrid; primarily in-person (Boston, MA) with some remote work. Candidates must be located withinmuting distance of downtown Boston as travel expenses and housing are not provided. Rehearsals will take place in Boston at Suffolk University, with tech and performances taking place at their Modern Theater.

Engagement Dates: July 1 – August 9, 2024 on a part-time basis, with 1-2 Zoom meetings in the spring.Please find below key dates related to our Apprentice Program and the ARC performances:

Apprentice Program Orientation is June 17. ARC auditions are June 30-July 1, with casting confirmed by the evening of July 1. (These dates are for your information and not required, except for July 1 evening, when the SMs will receive their cast lists to create the first daily call.)

Rehearsals will run July 2-July 25 at various ~3-8 hour blocks between 9AM-6PM. (No Saturdays until load-in July 26, no July 4-5, and various days off each week. No week is exactly the same.)

July 26: Load-in to Modern Theatre at Suffolk University (9am-2pm). SM is responsible for loading in andanizing show props to the Modern that morning.

Tech/Dress schedule for both shows will take place at various hours between July 27-31.

Performances run in rotating rep, each show performing three times, between August 1-Aug 8th, with schedule dependent on production.

August 9: Load out of Modern Theatre (9am-2pm). SM is responsible for gathering & loading out show props back to Suffolk University Sawyer Building.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Attend some pre-production meetings with ARC director and Production team

Work with other ARC SM and Production Manager/Mentor to co-create a streamlined template for rehearsal and performance reports for distribution

Work with ARC director and assistant directing intern to create andmunicate rehearsal calls/schedules to student performers

Maintain and distribute necessary paperwork for production, including a calling script, rehearsal and performance reports, props tracking paperwork, script changes, line notes, etc.

Convey information between directors, designers, production manager, actors, and staff

Some maintenance of rehearsal and performance spaces, i.e. collecting and restoring props to the locked closet, resetting the rehearsal room for the next class, and/or resetting the stage for the other cast

Assist with props load-in, set up, and strike between Sawyer Building and the Modern Theatre

May be asked to operate sound cues on QLab and/or basic lights up/down in performances

Provide CSC with a clean copy of the calling script for the production for archival purposes

Qualifications:

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Stage management experience is necessary. Experience with student actors is preferred.

Familiarity with Google Suite required; Experience with QLab a plus.

Candidates should be highlyanized and strongmunicators,mitted to fostering a space of care and learning for our students.Experience working with artists of all abilities, including neurodivergent artists and/or individuals who may need other amodation support is a plus.

Compensation: $2,070 total salary for the project, to be paid in two installments on a W-2, with anticipated hours of 130-138 total (equivalent to at least $15.00 per hour). This position is intended for a local candidate as we are unable to provide housing and transportation.
