As an Open Space Trainee at the City of Lakewood Parks, you’ll embark on a multifaceted journey to contribute to the preservation and enhancement of our natural resources while gaining valuable experience in various aspects of park management and conservation. The City of Lakewood is currently recruiting variable employees for this position. A variable employee is an at-will employee who works in a seasonal or temporary capacity. Their work schedule is based on business need. This position would be a part-time non benefitted position. Essential Functions: Lead volunteer groups and individual trail work to build and maintain soft surface trail systems under the guidance of the Natural Resources Specialist. Conduct inspections and decontaminations of watercraft to prevent the introduction of Aquatic Nuisance Species into the park, alongside other resource protection and maintenance duties. Collaborate with the Natural Resources Specialist to maintain trails, construct trail features to control erosion and build new trails. Educate the public on natural resources through public relations contacts, education programs, signs and written materials. Sell Park passes and firewood, collects revenue and prepares deposits. Perform basic maintenance duties such as litter cleanup, trash emptying, restroom cleaning, and sign installation. Collect and analyze data pertaining to trail use, land use and wildlife to inform decision-making processes. Assist with emergencies and provide first aid and rescue within training and ability. Implement the city’s natural areas plan to protect Lakewood’s Regional Parks. Must maintain and utilize City-provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when conducting activities where the employee is exposed to risks above those encountered in a traditional office setting. If injured on-the-job due to failure to utilize PPE a safety violation can be taken. Perform other duties as assigned. Important Functions: Install and remove park signs and fences as needed. Upkeep of tools, vehicles and other natural resources equipment. Assist with or present, educational programs or information to the public. GPS data collection and mapping using ARCMAP 10.
