Water Treatment Plant Apprentice Selma Water Works and Sewer Board Selma, AL 36701 THE WATERWORKS & SEWER BOARD OF THE CITY OF SELMA Please apply at the Administrative Office 1600 Selma Avenue Selma, Alabama 36702 POSITION: WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR APPRENTICE PURPOSE: TO ESTABLISH AN ELIGIBLE REGISTER OR FILL PRESENT AND FUTURE VACANCIES WITH THE WATERWORKS AND SEWER BOARD OF THE CITY OF SELMA Shift Work SALARY RANGE: $27,976.00 – $40,300.00 DEADLINE: Open Until Filled FRINGE BENEFITS INCLUDE MEDICAL INSURANCE, RETIREMENT, PAID VACATION, HOLIDAYS AND SICK LEAVE. JOB REQUIREMENTS Obtain and maintain an Alabama Grade III Water Certification. Water Treatment Plant Apprentice will have two years to obtain the State of Alabama Grade III Water Certification. Maintains treatment plant chemicals, machines and equipment to provide potable water for residential, commercial and industrial use. Maintains remote facilities. Collects grab water samples from the plant and distribution system; when required performs chemical, physical, and bacteriological tests to assure water quality; submits samples for testing as required by state agencies. Determines and adds specified amounts of chemicals such as chlorine, fluoride, potassium permanganate, and lime. Loads lime machine with 50 pound bags of lime as needed. Calibrates equipment and adjusts chemical feeders for optimal chemical output. Maintains plant records, including operations logs, daily diaries, chemical inventories; compiles reports as required by supervisor. Monitors charts, dials, pumps, chemical feeders, laboratory equipment, meters, and gauges in the laboratory to determine status of various functions of the plant; performs equipment and laboratory preventive maintenance duties. Performs minor repairs, operations adjustments, and preventive maintenance on plant equipment as needed. Reads and records chemical usage; adjusts chemical feeders; mixes chemicals; changes chlorine cylinders and refills chemical day storage containers as required. Checks motors and pumps for excessive noise and temperatures; reports problems to appropriate personnel. Ensures buildings and grounds are safe and secure. Performs grounds maintenance and housekeeping duties as needed. Assist in the completion pf monthly operating reports (MROs). Performs other related duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position. Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Alabama for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
