The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a mechanically inclined individual to fill an Equipment Technician Lead vacancy, located in Kent, WA. This is a night shift position and the hours are 8:00 pm – 6:30 am, Sunday – Thursday. In this role, you will plan, schedule, and direct operations, maintenance, and repair activities for the south end of the region (i.e. Kent, Bellevue, Corson and Ballinger shops) according to the mechanic workload and priorities of Maintenance Operations, Signals, Bridge, Traffic, and the engineering staff. This position inspects, diagnoses, and makes major and minor repairs, and perform preventative maintenance on all types of equipment used in highway maintenance or heavy and industrial/commercial equipment. This position performs emergency repairs outside the shop and assist technicians in repairs.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Equipment Technician Lead will:
Plan schedule and direct operations, maintenance and repair activities.
Receives and inspects equipment as they enter the shop.
Coordinate how and where the equipment will be repaired.
Assign to other personnel and inspect when the job is complete.
Works with the Kent, Bellevue, Corson and Ballinger shops to oversee the Preventive Maintenance program and assist with equipment operator training.
Schedule, transport, and monitor warranty work
Monitors shop safety and ensure shop cleanliness.
Repair, overhaul and maintain heavy equipment and other types of equipment used in the maintenance and construction of roadways, in some cases, may design equipment.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
High School Diploma or GED
Three (3) years of experience as a journey-level mechanic maintaining and repairing heavy-duty equipment OR journey-level standing as a heavy equipment mechanic, demonstrated by completion of a recognized apprenticeship, OR by journey-level standing as recognized by a labor union.
Ability to communicate in writing, verbally, and through the use of a computer to lead, instruct, schedule, and disseminate information concerning the shop’s operation.
Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), with ‘N’ and Air Brake endorsements, no automatic transmission restriction and DOT Medical Certification within 6 months of hire date.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
Successful completion of vocational technical training in heavy equipment, light vehicles and/or industrial/commercial equipment repair, including welding/fabrication.

The listed salary includes the Legislative approved King County Premium and Assignment Pay.
In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
