On-the-Job Training: Every program includes structured on-the-job training. Apprentices get hands-on training from an experienced mentor at the job site for typically not less than one year. On-the-job training is developed through mapping the skills and knowledge that the apprentice must learn throughout the program to be fully proficient at the job.
Related Instruction: Apprentices receive related instruction that complements on-the-job learning. This instruction delivers the technical, workforce, and academic competencies that apply to the job. Education partners collaborate with businesses to develop the curriculum based on the skills and knowledge needed by apprentices.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities
1) Work from orders, blueprints, route and method sheets, and direction from supervisor.
2) Welds together metal components as specified by layout, diagram, work order, welding procedures, and oral instructions, using electric wire feed welding equipment.
3) Obtain welding, fixtures and positioners from storage, identify by part or tool number, as indicated on route sheet.
4) Weld beads of prescribed length, radius, and size to fasten elements securely together to meet specifications and leak proof seams when required.
5) Weld elements to make regular and irregular, eccentric, and symmetrical weldments of simple, or design.
6) Vary amperage and voltage to obtain quality weld at maximum linear speed consistent with good.
7) Obtain accurate angular, dimensional and spatial relationships, within specified limits, by careful a fixture, proper positioning, clamping, and checking of parts in fixture.
8) Strikes arc, which generates heat to melt and deposit metal from electrode to work piece and join edges of work piece.
9) Manually guides gun along weld line, maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from color of metal, sound of weld and size of molten puddle.
10) Welds in flat, horizontal, and vertical positions.
11) Cleans or degreases weld joint or work piece using wire brush, portable grinder or chemical bath.
12) May cut metal plate or structural shapes using oxy/acetylene torch.
